May Day, International Workers’ Day, is upon us. This is the day when we once again reaffirm our resolve to rid humanity of all the miseries of the ruling capitalist system and to fight for a society worthy of human beings.
After 136 years since the first May Day, despite all the advances in technology, even the 40-hour working week is still not implemented everywhere. Working life is continuously being extended, child labour is rife, and millions continue to die from hunger, treatable diseases, and destitution.
While our class produces all the wealth in society, our share has diminished proportionally, and the gap between the haves and have-nots has reached unprecedented levels. Average wages, even in the most advanced countries, have declined in real terms over the past two decades. With the ever-growing cost of living, large sections of global society are unable to afford even the most basic necessities.
In addition, there are more wars raging today than ever before, as ruling classes position themselves in a multipolar world, with growing militarisation and ever-expanding war machines, in pursuit of greater “spheres of influence” and higher profits. The genocidal wars, taking place across the world, are ones we are not only forced to pay for but in which we are also the primary victims.
In Iran, we are now bearing the brunt of one such war. A war that the US and Israel have escalated once again in recent months, with aerial bombardments that have killed thousands and destroyed hospitals, schools, residential homes, and workplaces, even while we were working in them. A war that has worsened the already severe cost-of-living crisis, massive unemployment, and the lack of safety and security across the country. A war that the Islamic Republic is also using to suppress our movement for equality and freedom.
On this May Day, workers in Iran stand in solidarity with workers around the world, proclaiming that this is a war imposed on us by ruling classes to further divide us. This is not our war, and we demand its immediate and unconditional end.
On May Day, we celebrate our solidarity with workers across the globe and reaffirm our commitment to stand united as an international class against a parasitic capitalist system that survives only because we remain divided. This is our day, the day we celebrate the strength of our united class and our solidarity in a worldwide struggle in which we have nothing to lose but our chains.
Workers of the world, unite!
Long live international solidarity!
