Over the past week, following the full-scale military assault by Israeli forces on Iran, the situation in the Middle East has become unprecedentedly perilous. To date, the Islamic Republic of Iran and the state of Israel have refrained from disclosing much of the destruction, citing “military secrecy”. This is not only limited to destroyed buildings and sites, but also includes the true number of civilian deaths and the countless injured and wounded across many cities and regions.
Today, we are witnessing a war that has gone beyond all recognised standards, binding laws, and international conventions. War crimes are being committed under the guise of “self-defence”, the alleged threat of a “nuclear Iran”, and in the name of “defending the people of Iran”. In fact, this is nothing but the enactment of a policy where “the end justifies the means”. This war is being perpetuated by the Israeli ruling body to escape its political deadlock and global isolation. It stands in direct opposition to the popular, humane, and freedom-seeking movement in Iran against the Islamic Republic.
Six days of bombings and the killing of innocent civilians have already dealt a heavy blow to the Iranian people's movement for freedom, and its continuation could inflict seriously setbacks to this movement.
While this war continues, Western governments have given their official support to the Israeli state, and the United Nations has, at best, merely called for “de-escalation”; as if the core issue is not the war itself and Israel's unilateral aggression, nor the terror it has unleashed, but only its “scale and dimension”! We have all seen the same rhetoric before, even after the massacres of Palestinians over the past 20 months, following the genocidal campaign launched by Netanyahu’s government in the Gaza Strip, along with its publicly declared agenda for a “New Middle East Order”.
The policies pursued by Israel in Gaza, the West Bank, Lebanon, Syria, and now Iran are at the heart of this war, and it remains uncertain which country in the region will be the next target.
While governments and their representatives, despite their “advice and warnings” in the UN, have repeatedly shown is that the aggression and crimes of the Israeli state and its armed forces know no limits. The Israeli government and those responsible for these crimes have total impunity from any consequences, legal or otherwise. Meanwhile, official media outlets and global news agencies, by censoring these crimes and the devastating impact of Israel’s imposed wars on the lives of people in the region, and by adhering to their own governments' unconditional support for Israel, have effectively become complicit in these crimes.
Clearly, the responsibility for ending this dangerous situation rests with us, the working class, and the peace-loving and freedom-seeking people of the world. In contrast to the shameful rhetoric of governments and international institutions that justify these wars, we, as the only force with no interest in launching or continuing these crimes against humanity, must act directly and powerfully to bring the ongoing war in the Middle East to an end.
We call on all workers’ organisations, unions, and all civilized people around the world to unite in condemning the war-mongering actions of the Israeli government in the Middle East. We demand an immediate end to the aggression of Netanyahu’s government and its allies, especially the United States and Western governments, against Gaza, Syria, Lebanon, and Iran, and an end to the support and arming of the Israeli state in its continued crimes against humanity.
