The murder of George Floyd in broad daylight in Minneapolis is yet another tragic example of the depth of injustice in the flagbearer of the “great democracy”, the “Supreme power” in the world. The filming of this murder and its mass broadcast has brought outrage not only in the USA, but internationally against the institutional racism that is rife in the police force.
This is not the first time that the police force has carried out such horrific acts; the extent of racism not only in the police force, judiciary but in welfare, health, education, etc across all aspects of life in the USA is not new and bears the marks of mass protests over several decades in almost every state in this country.
The holding of the trial of the officers at the scene is a legitimate demand of today. But this murder typifies a much broader issue. It has shone a torch on the role of not only these officers, and not only the police force, but Trump and his role in playing the race card over the past few years, his rhetoric on the construction of a wall to keep “out” the migrants, whom he shamelessly called “thugs”, and his re-raising of the “America first” banner.
The protests of today, are not just against the murder of George Floyd, goes much further and have shown the depth the anger against an unjust system wrapped in the charade of “American Dream”. A system that has given unlimited authority to its police, the same force that created the massacre of May Day back in 19th Century, the crushing of the protests during the great depression years, the same force that suppressed the civil rights protests, the same force that attacked the mass protests against the Vietnam war, Korea war, Gulf war,… and every other protest against the ruling system in the USA. The dispatch of the National Guard today, is the same scale as that took place just after the Second World War, and the martial law again for the same purpose of crushing any protest.
To serve justice today, it is not only the trial of those police officers who killed George Floyd, but the entire “law enforcing” body, including the Home Secretary and the President, for their role in maintaining this unjust system.
The deep marks of racism in the entire system of the USA are all part and parcel of a system that even today, in the face of over 106,000 official deaths from the Covid 19 virus, has shown a total disregard for the lives of human beings. The protests today show the rage of people who have said that enough is enough. The way forward and the key for ensuring that the ruling body takes a step back, is in the hand of the working class in USA. This is the force whose mighty actions of protest today, would make the Administration to yield and retreat.
We stand in support and solidarity with the people in the USA and their protests and demand for justice.
